The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge (BWSC), the world’s largest solar challenge began in 1987 and is a 3,000-kilometre endurance adventure that occurs once every two years. The BWSC, run by event organiser, the South Australian Motor Sport Board, in partnership with Northern Territory Major Events, has become the world’s foremost innovation challenge with teams from around the world vying to become the first to deliver sustainable solar powered electric vehicles. Teams are striving to make the Darwin start line on Sunday 22 October, in their bid to deliver the world’s most efficient solar electric car.
This year marks the event’s 16th crossing of Australia. The BWSC events attract around 1,000 - 1500 participants in addition to supporters, industry and media and a global audience millions generating 400+ industry partnerships across energy, automotive, engineering, financial, material sciences and ICT sectors.
Three classes of vehicle, Challenger, Cruiser and Adventure, will take on the Aussie outback in a contest of endurance, strategy, and innovation. The elite Challenger Class, powered only by the sun, is conducted in a single stage, from Darwin to Adelaide. 2023 will see the fifth running of the solar electric, Cruiser Class, created by the BWSC to change the way we think about what we drive and what fuels we use. For these practical electric vehicles, success is judged on a range of design and performance measures. Competing in the ‘race within the race’ teams must make ambitious time windows at control stops to prove they can manage energy travelling over 1,000km before being allowed to charge externally at Tenant Creek and Coober Pedy. The stage is set for a total eclipse of past events and achievements.
The 2023 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge will officially start in Darwin on Sunday 22 October and finish on Sunday 29 October 2023 in Adelaide with the BWSC Awards Ceremony. In the week preceding the event, teams must pass a series of practical safety and compliance tests to qualify for the start line. The final qualifying activities are the Dynamic Scrutineering time trials, ‘Hot Laps’ at Hidden Valley on Saturday 21 October – a highlight for many.
