A group of science enthused Year 8 students from Medellin in Columbia have won the trip of their lifetime after winning a Solar Car Competition with over 500 competing teams from more than 200 schools in Columbia!
The 13 year old boys developed the winning car in the competition made by solar panels donated by sponsor EPM, Columbia’s main power supply company. The competition organized by the Science Foundation of Columbia aims to create interest amongst Years 8, 9 and 10 students with the hope of building their own Columbian Solar Car to compete in a future Veolia World Solar Challenge.
The competition also donated the second and third prize winners a Physic’s Laboratory for their school promoting continued education about solar power and renewable energy sources for the environment.
The Columbian team will be in Australia for 5 days, attending the Victoria Square ceremonial finish and a quick visit to Sydney on thier way home. Hopefully we will see them competing in future years!

Aurora and the other teams arriving at Tennant Creek this afternoon were held there on advice of Northern Territory Emergency Services.
The teams are on the road again after fire disruption...
17/10/2011
Day 2 of the Veolia World Challenge concluded with the top three teams camped together at a police roadblock near the Devils Marbles in Outback NT. Wauchope roadhouse played host to Tokai, Nuna and Michigan as bushfire, raged across the Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek. Although some teams were held at Tennant Creek a little over 100 Km behind the leaders, the majority of participants are travelling towards Tennant Creek without disruption.
Day 3 - with the road now reopened the three leaders left Wauchope starting from 8am separated by the times between them when they arrived. Tokai departed at 8am, Nuon at 8.10am and Michigan at 8.12am.
Teams held up at Tennant Creek have been given departure times to reflect the separation of these teams at the time of the disruption. Aurora left at 8.50am, Ashiya at 9.05 am, Team Twente at 9.09, UniNSW at 9.18 am, and Umicore at 9.32 am. Instanbul will leave at 10.36 am, Okinawa at 11.53 am and Stanford at 11.57 am. Darwin, Twente - 15 oktober 2011
Qualification time of 02:02:20 gives Solar Team Twente ‘pole position’
After a tense qualification session, Solar Team Twente has snatched pole position in the World Solar Challenge. For the team, it it is best qualification result ever.
All preparations for the race have been completed and the team is ready for the 3000 kilometre race through the Australian Outback. The race starts tomorrow 08.30 hr Australian time (01:00 hr Dutch time). Having completed all tests, the technical examination and the qualification, the weather now poses the greatest challenge
The qualification for the World Solar Challenge 2011 happened Saturday morning on the Hidden Valley racetrack near Darwin. The participating teams, around 30 in total, were allowed to drive just one lap (one for warming up, the second full throttle). The team from Twente has waited patiently and was allowed to decide for themselves when to enter the track, as long as there would be no other cars. The team subsequently managed to perform a lap time of 2 minutes and 2,20 seconds. Team leader Siebe Brinkhof is content: ‘The team was nervous but with racing driver Jens Hegeman behind the wheel of the 21Connect we have accomplished the best possible result. We have to remain calm however: it’s a race where anything can happen. Together with weather expert Helga van Leur, the team now has to challenge the greatest uncertainty: the weather. We even expect rain.
The top 5 starting ranks after qualifications: 1) Solar Team Twente - 02.02.20 2) Nuon Solar Team - 02.02.50 3) Michigan - 02.03.01 4) Sunswift - 02.04.33 5) Tokai - 02.07.77.
Preparation race and the convoy
Solar Team Twente leaves tomorrow with a convoy of 12 cars. At the front, there is the weather car, the scout and the escort car. Next comes the solar car 21Connect and after the solar car drives the DMU (Decision Making Unit), a bus where all important decisions are made. Escort + 21Connect + DMU are called the ‘racing convoy’. Behind the bus drive the cars with the mechanics and the electro technicians. Thereafter comes the media car, the car with the photographer, the film crew from Saxion and the film crew of RTL. Last on is the truck with among other the tents for the camp and the workshop.
The team is well prepared for the long stay in the Australian Outback. Aylin Knepper: ‘We can only go to a supermarket once, in Alice Springs. We have 1000 liter water, 60 loaves of bread, 20 kilogram cornflakes, 30 liter life milk, 10 kilogram chocolate spread, 300 muesli bars and 300 packages potato chips. At the finish in Adelaide, family members and the partners from Twente, among which Grolsch, so we are motivated to reach the finish line!
Follow the team
This afternoon 15.45 hr the Dutch channel RTL 7 broadcasts the qualification of Solar Team Twente. During the World Solar Challenge in Australia the team from Twente provides news messages, blog items, tweets, photos, videos and their app. RTL Z will daily broadcast a program with weather expert Helga van Leur and Reinoud Broekhuijsen. Racing the Sun with Solar Spirit
07/10/2011
A team of students from TafeSA are preparing to race over 3000 kilometres with just the power of the Sun, as Solar Spirit readies for the World Solar Challenge.
Teams from around the world will travel to Darwin for the race, the will take the field through the centre of Australia and finish in Adelaide, some four days later.
TafeSA team leader Gerry Paay said he hope the team's car 62 would finished in the middle of the field, with a top-ten in reach if all goes well.
Gary expects the car to average 80 km/h over the course, with a predicted top speed from the vehicle at up to 120 km/h if conditions are perfect.
Teams will commence racing from Darwin at 8:30am, Sunday 15 October, 2011, with the lead teams expected to finish in Adelaide on Wednesday 19 October 2011 after midday.

Solar Team Turns Up The Heat on Rivals
03/10/2011
In just 13 days 39 teams from 20 countries will contest a 3,000 kilometre race across Australia, the Veolia World Solar Challenge, taking to the start line in Darwin on Sunday October 16. You won’t hear the roar of engines as they pass, or smell the fumes on the hot desert air. Their energy source is truly high performance – they run on the power of the sun.
The race for line honours in Adelaide is hotly contested at the top. The Dutch Nuon Solar team, which will race with Nuna6 this year, believes they have the car to take the title and deliver their team their fifth World Solar Challenge from six attempts. They have dominated past events, winning in 2001, 2003, 2005 & 2007. Their excellent record was foiled in 2009 by the Japanese team from Tokai University.

Sun sets on one of solar car racing's heros
23/09/2010
We recently received the sad news that that a respected member of our solarcar community, David Fewchuk, Chairman of Aurora, past winner of the World Solar Challenge and long time champion of solar car racing around the world, died of a heart attack while on a tour of China promoting solarcars.
He was a tireless worker and advocate of sustainable transport. As Chairman of the Australian team Aurora he showed great skill and leadership. Aurora participated in every World Solar Challenge, was the 1999 winner and, with a car equipped with terrestial solar cells, came second no less than four times.
Aurora also raised the bar for solarcars with 24 hour marathons, a 17,000 km around Australia tour and a claimed record for the longest journey by an electric car on a single charge - 12,000 km!
David also loved photography and was usually seen with camera in hand. Many of his pictures can be seen at the Aurora website www.aurorasolarcar.com
David will be fondly remembered, and sadly missed.
Chris Selwood.
