How many times has your team participated in the event?

SP participated in the World Solar Challenge in 1999 (as SunSPEED), 2013 and 2015. This will be our 4th World Solar Challenge (3rd as SunSPEC), 2nd in Cruiser category.

What is the design philosophy behind your solar car?

2013 WSC was our first attempt at building a cruiser class solar EV. Building on the knowledge and experiences gained in 2013, we have totally redesigned SunSPEC 5 for better ride comfort, vehicle handling and performance and better solar collector efficiency. Our long term goal is to develop a solar car which can be used as a normal family vehicle.

What is unique about your solar car?

SunSPEC 5 has a redesigned solar array for better collector efficiency, commercial quality, adjustable seating, fully enclosed cabin for occupants, full dashboard, driver console and custom molded front headlamps. There are more parts fabricated in-house, compared to our previous solar car. Overall, SunSPEC 5 looks more like a normal family vehicle compared to its predecessors.

Why does your team value participating in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge?

Through our participation in the World Solar Challenge, we hope to nurture our students with life-ready competencies such as creativity, innovation, cross-cultural understanding and resilience. Students learn to work in teams, take initiative, balance calculated risks and strive for excellence despite setbacks, becoming Life Ready, Work Ready and World Ready in the process – and serve as an inspiration to others.

What is the one thing your team is looking forward to when you visit Australia?

Be the first team from SE Asia to complete the entire 3000 km of BWSC, while fostering teamwork and enjoying this epic event, leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime.
