How many times has your team participated in the event?

This 2017-edition will be the third time in the world solar challenge and the cruiser class, after joining in 2013 and 2015.

What is the design philosophy behind your solar car?

Solar Team Eindhoven’s vision is to build a family car, a balance between aerodynamic, aesthetic and practical design. This resulted in a car body which features some well-known automotive design features whilst also being really aerodynamic and spacious. That is the bottom line we use in all our designs; trying to always achieve a balance between making a car which is both efficient and future-proof. We think we succeeded very well with a car that is more efficient than its predecessors and includes some state-of-the-art technologies to not only generate energy but also supply it back to the grid.

What is unique about your solar car?

Our solar car is unique because she is a five-seater family car which focusses around efficiency without losing practicality. Through a smart charging and discharging system she charges the battery when the demand of energy from the grid is high and vice versa. Any surplus of energy generated can easily be supplied back to the grid. Whilst driving, the car gives subtle feedback on the driving behavior of the user. In addition, through the solar navigator she gives advice on efficient routes, efficient driving speed and the best parking location to generate as much solar energy as possible.

Why does your team value participating in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge?

As the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge is the oldest and most well-known Solar Challenge we view it as the world championship for solar cars. We really like the philosophy of the Cruiser Class; bringing solar cars closer to reality, that is why we think it is really important to participate. It is the perfect way to really test the potential of our car and show the world what is possible in the area of sustainable mobility and especially solar cars.

What is the one thing your team is looking forward to when you visit Australia?

We are really looking forward to the fun, yet competitive ambience the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge provides. We look forward to compete against and have fun with the other teams. Finally it is an adventure which perfectly concludes a year of hard work to build the best possible solar car.
